PodCast: Utilising an AFO as a rehabilitation tool in Adult Acquired Flat Foot

Firefly podiatrist, Sarah O’Connell presents an audio format case study on the treatment for Adult Acquired Flatfoot using a Richie Brace as a rehabilitation tool. Joining Sarah to discuss the case study is Martin Mc Geough of Firefly.

Firefly Orthoses: A Case Study

In the wake of Britain’s departure from the European Union, Firefly Orthoses has featured as an Atlantic Economic Corridor Brexit case study. Instead of dwelling on the negative impact, Firefly has focused on the business potentials that Brexit can bring.

Research and Development Department

Building upon the success of the Firefly Summit in 2017, the wheels of innovation are truly in motion in Firefly. Earlier this year we established our own Research and Development department, headed up by Jari Pallari PhD, who arrives at the company with a wealth of knowledge in orthotic product engineering and additive manufacturing.

As the case study highlights, this is a very exciting moment in Firefly Orthoses. With various opportunities in product design, podiatric education and training being developed, the company is looking toward a bright future despite the political uncertainty created by Brexit.

What is the Atlantic Economic Corridor (AEC)?

The AEC is the term applied to a non-administrative or “linear” region along the Irish Western seaboard, stretching from County Kerry to County Donegal. The AEC aims to build and increase collaboration within the region that maximises its assets, attracts investment and creates jobs and prosperity in the region.

Book your place on June’s MSK Workshop

This weekend the Firefly MSK Workshop takes place in Central London. The event is proving increasingly popular among podiatrists seeking to up-skill in the area of MSK and biomechanics.

With continued demand for more Firefly MSK educational events, the next workshop has been scheduled for 29th of June and you can book your place now.

The worskhop is highly practical with lots of hands on learning and covers the following topics:

  • Evidence-Based Practice – Alignment Vs Force
  • MSK Assessments
  • Prescription Writing

We held our first workshop in Firefly’s head office in Sligo last October where podiatrists from across the UK, Ireland and further afield attended. You can read the review from that workshop here.

The workshop is fully CPD accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

To ensure you get the most from the workshop and to maximise your time, places on the workshop will be limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. The workshop is highly practical with lots of hands-on learning so small class sizes are required.

We’re delighted to announce Firefly Orthoses Ltd has been awarded I.S. EN ISO 9001:2015 by the NSAI.

The National Standards Authority of Ireland describes ISO 9001 as:

ISO 9001 is the world’s foremost quality management standard, used by hundreds of thousands of organizations in over 170 countries around the globe. It sets out the essential requirements for a practical and effective quality management system (QMS) which is, in essence, a system for minimising risk and maximising opportunity. ISO 9001 is used by a diverse array of organizations, from giant multinational corporations to local community groups.

The standard is the first port of call for almost all organizations, large or small, public or private, that have decided to strengthen, streamline or review their management procedures. It can be used to focus on improving performance in a particular department, plant or site. However, it is generally most effective when implemented throughout an organization at every level.

The award recognises Firefly Orthoses’ excellence in quality management systems. For our clients, this means they can have confidence that Firefly’s procedures, products and services meet with the highest international standards.

Firefly MSK Workshop Report

13 podiatrists from across the UK and Ireland and one from Latvia travelled to Sligo for a full-day musculoskeletal (MSK) workshop at Firefly’s offices recently, with the goal of learning how to achieve better patient outcomes.

For podiatrist whose caseload may not regularly see them treat patients with MSK pathologies, biomechanics can seem daunting. With this in mind the Firefly workshop was designed to develop the attendees understanding of how to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate a appropriate MSK treatments.

Sports Podiatrist, Adam McIlwaine kicked off the morning session with some podiatric theory as a grounding before he demonstrated a number of key clinical MSK assessments.

The group then explored movement patterns and fundamentals of gait analysis with Adam. A topic he excels at from his professional clinical experience treating elite level athletes including his work with Ulster Rugby.

In the afternoon, Martin Mc Geough lead a discussion on prescription writing for custom made foot orthoses, offering his pearls of wisdom on how to effectively prescribe for common pathologies.

Extended Scope MSK Podiatrist, Greg Gillanders has a special interest and extensive experience in the field of bracing therapy. He led a discussion on AFO rehabilitation and demonstrated Plaster of Paris casting for bracing therapy.

The day drew to a close with Firefly podiatrist Sarah O’Connell working through a number of case histories as a re-cap and theoretical application of the day’s learning.

If you wish to find out more about Firefly’s future MSK training opportunities, join our workshop mailing list.

RRU Podiatrists Visit Firefly

Following a recent successful military tender application, Firefly welcomed ten RRU podiatrists to Sligo for a training day, continuing Firefly’s commitment to providing custom made orthoses solutions to the military.

Despite a slightly later than scheduled start, due to a delayed inbound flight from Stansted airport, the RRU podiatrists arrived to Firefly Orthoses with a busy day’s agenda ahead, designed to provide them with a grounding in Firefly’s range of products, insight into Firefly’s manufacturing profile and to connect them to Firefly’s Technical Support department.

The morning started with an introduction to the processes used to produce Firefly’s foot orthotic product range, covering manual manufacture, Cad-Cam, direct milled, vacuum formed and 3D printed procedures. The visiting podiatrists discussed load management and considered the effects of kinetics and kinematics in patient treatment.

A tour of Firefly’s lab and clinical division was finished off by calling to RunPod – Firefly’s sister, Podiatrist lead, running shoe store. RunPod offer customers a biomechanical assessments and shoe selection advice to guide the customer in finding the most suitable shoe for their needs.

Bracing therapy was covered in the afternoon session with a focus on the Richie Brace range of AFOs. The podiatrists were also introduced to the innovative Wiivv ‘recovery’ sandals and worked through the process of capturing their own foot data using the Wiivv mobile app. The podiatrists will receive their own 3D printed Wiivv sandals in the coming weeks.

The day concluded with the podiatrist crossing the Garavogue River for an evening meal in the Glasshouse Hotel, and events were brought to a close with a pint of Guinness in Sligo’s oldest pub, Thomas Connolly’s Bar on Markievicz Road.

Thank you to all the RRU podiatrists for making the time to visit Firefly and to spend some time in Sligo – the land of hearts desire.
